I have three files with bashrc in the name, but I can’t save any of them; they are read-only, all with root ownership. I have two files called bash.bashrc, and three called dot.bashrc.

  • bash.bashrc in /etc.
  • dot.bashrc in /usr/share/base-files.
  • bash.bashrc in/media/jamesray/0c86863c-3982–4e93–9250–0b6074f92628/etc
  • bash.bashrc in /usr/share/doc/adduser/examples/adduser.local.conf.examples
  • dot.bashrc in /usr/share/doc/adduser/examples/adduser.local.conf.examples/skel

I only installed Ubuntu yesterday. How do I change a file with root ownership, and which file should I change?

The plant in the foreground of my gravatar is a pineapple plant, planted from the top of a pineapple at my Grandma’s house. The photo was taken in 2015.
